What's new, by version
Server versions lead; the app release that carries each one is beside it. Full notes are on the server and app release pages.
0.26.2, app 0.17.2: The sound library on demand
2026-10-11. The sound library is re-encoded to Opus (146 MB down to 76 MB) and leaves the apps' installers, which are back to half the size: an admin taps Download the sound library in the Sound panel or the admin panel, and a phone writes it one track at a time. 171 placeholder thumbnails replaced by a majority vote across three art reviews. A connection a local model server dropped before answering is asked again once, instead of telling the table the model is unavailable.
0.26.1, app 0.17.1: Table language, the Sound panel, several characters per player
2026-10-11. A Table language setting with fifteen languages: every model call that writes for people writes in it, the server reads story and player text the same way in all of them, and picture prompts reach the image model in English. The Sound panel: now playing, takes per cue, Next, a level per layer, and an open-licensed library. Play as moves the Hand, the turn HUD, the message box and the board together, the enlarged board keeps its tools, and reach is measured to a creature's nearest square. Agents read and answer the DM's whispers; Z-Image Turbo joins the ComfyUI picker. Android draws edge to edge.
0.26.0, app 0.17.0: WorldForge and the rules audit closed
2026-10-10. WorldForge joins the workshop as its own tool. Workshop copies of published monsters, spells, items, subclasses, species, feats and backgrounds play exactly like the original, hazards are a homebrew kind, and an NPC can fight from a stat block. A written Market travels with its prep and keeps the shelf the table left. The 2014 rules audit's 50 gaps close at their roots. Connected agents read a long campaign whole and can be woken by signed decision webhooks. Painted race and class portraits replace the silhouettes.
0.25.0, app 0.16.0: Guided setup, a steering seat, Quick start, Steam Deck
2026-10-09. npm run setup and a guided setup that finds and tests the storyteller, pictures, voice, sign-ups and your own agent. Assistant links let ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or Meta Muse play on a device world. AI narrates, I steer seats a person behind the screen, and a disputed ruling is settled by that person or a vote. Damage and conditions aimed at a player can wait for their approval. Admin switches for who may start campaigns and who may spend paid AI, with a usage ledger. Quick start seats four ready-made heroes in two clicks. Workshop copies and imports keep every link; feats teach their spells and the combat feats reach the table. In the apps: the Steam Deck layout and controllers, Share on this Wi-Fi, in-app updates for the tarball, Flatpak and Mac, and the guided setup as a native screen.
0.24.9 and 0.24.8, apps 0.15.8 and 0.15.7: The creator explains itself
2026-10-07 and 08. The reason Continue is held sits beside it with Show me; racial cantrips are free; every content pack option names its book; greyed skills and a shut subclass menu say why; one price table for the starter pack. A human DM gets the monsters' turn as cards. Feats grant what their text says, with a "Languages and training" block on the sheet, and a kept 4d6 roll stays kept. Local models get their window back, with the tool definitions budgeted and shown in the Context tab. OpenAI's GPT-6 models call their tools, Codex runs a table again, and an agent program can live inside the Docker image.
0.24.7 to 0.24.5, apps 0.15.4 to 0.15.6: Setup codes and a voice for every speaker
2026-10-05 and 06. A new server's first account needs a setup code from its log, and the apps claim their own worlds. Uploads, pictures and narration sit behind the login, with daily upload budgets and per-account lockouts. A table whose live stream goes quiet reconnects on its own. The AI no longer acts for a silent player, damage told in prose goes back to the dice, and fights open at the story's distance. Narration can use any OpenAI-compatible speech server, starts as it renders, and every speaker can have a voice. The board stays whole on small and short screens, and an About dialog names the exact build. In the apps: Windows finds an installed agent and reads a large graphics card's real memory, a host is told when another device holds its room code, and Android permission prompts no longer close the app.
0.24.4 to 0.24.0, apps 0.15.0 to 0.15.3: The rulebook, secret dice and a human DM's fight
2026-10-01 to 04. The whole SRD 5.1 as a rulebook at the table, and an engine that holds about 96 percent of it. Dictation in every prose field a DM writes in. Every roll names who made it against whom, and every roll the server makes is a dice card. Movement per turn, a Stand up card, and 294 new painted combat card icons. A human DM's fight asks the table for initiative and holds for the monsters' turns, and whispers reach the DM. Players get a dice tray with Roll in secret. A content-pack druid can join the party again. In the apps: the Mac build is signed and opens (0.15.2).
0.23.11 to 0.23.8, apps 0.14.6 to 0.14.9: The engine holds the rules
2026-09-26 to 28. The server enforces SRD 5.1 itself: one legality check for creation, editing, import and the library; hit dice, slots, saves, speed, armour class and hit points worked out by the server; level-up one level at a time with the experience; and campaign settings for hit points and starting wealth. No DM turn ends empty. The character creator holds to the rules it shows, content pack options grant what their text says, and the table you are on can be deleted from home. The tunnel broker moved to storage that heavy sharing cannot exhaust. Node 22.18 or newer is required.
0.23.7 to 0.23.0, apps 0.14.0 to 0.14.5: The world screens and a lighter table
2026-09-22 to 25. Home is a title screen with Continue and save slots; the table is cinematic, with an initiative ribbon, a party rail and the fight stage. 4d6 throws six sets into a tray. A spell book with 5e preparation, chapters grouped under acts with waypoint-gated beats, and story memory in any language. Pictures as right-sized WebP, a table that re-renders far less, audio that seeks, and chapters that close again. Fixes from the first community play with Claude Code as the Dungeon Master. Item info cards. In the apps: Android no longer freezes when it stops hosting, smaller downloads, and the app's doors in the account menu.
0.22.0, app 0.13.0: Bring your own agent
2026-09-21. Claude Code, Codex, opencode or Grok Build can narrate on their own sign-in, held to the same rules as the built-in Dungeon Master: Admin, Agent program on a server, a fourth door on the desktop app's Story AI screen. Connected agents let a player's own MCP client act as them with ticked scopes and a token shown once. From community pull requests: verified backup and restore in Admin, Backup and as scripts, and a Test backend probe for the text and utility models. The Flatpak build explains that its sandbox cannot start programs.
0.21.3, app 0.12.8: One OpenAI key per device
2026-09-19. On an app-hosted world the Story AI choice covers every campaign, including ones made before the key existed; a campaign used to freeze its backend on the day it was created. One key for narration and pictures: a story on api.openai.com lends its key to the OpenAI image backend, host-gated. OpenAI models pack the prompt against 128K tokens instead of the 16K stand-in.
0.21.2, app 0.12.7: Rogues and bards, the short window
2026-09-19. A rogue or a level 3 or higher bard can be created again (the Calling step's expertise gate waited on the next step). Under 720 px of height the Hand is a rail and the message box never gives way. Narration renders bold and italic instead of printing asterisks.
0.21.1, apps 0.12.1 to 0.12.6: The redesign inside the apps
2026-09-19. The Hand on short windows; context menus and the voice dock inside the apps' game root. In the apps: the update check runs as the app opens with a popup and an installer that installs (rpm, deb, tar.gz and Mac download their own file); the day theme and low effects reach the host's pages; the display and story faces ship inside the apps; one Preact on Android so menus, dialogs and tooltips work; the 2,008 painted icons ship inside the apps; pages scroll and page changes no longer freeze; host pictures no longer give up on their first request; Android shows an http host's pictures; AI-generated pictures load through a Cloudflare-poisoned cache.
0.21.0, app 0.12.0: The redesign
2026-09-19. Combat: the Hand, the board as a stage with a spotlight and an initiative rail of portraits, a turn HUD from the engine's budget, violet roll cards, damage in its own shape, enemy intent behind a setting. Rebuilt character creator (diamond stepper, 4d6 grid, array slots, point buy steppers, card grids) and campaign creator (six steps, world portals, a cover read-back). Map Forge and Map Editor rebuilt with a tool rail, layers, tileset panel, inspector, per-map skins and stamped props. Motion on every control, one sliding highlight per row, springs on dialogs. A new front door with a painting of one of the seven kinds of world. The app's own controls everywhere. Painted handouts, the story book, level-up, rest, loot and arrival moments. Fixes: the QR button shares the one public address; 25 lineages' ability bumps apply; confirmations on revoking an invite and removing a pack; point buy enforces its budget.
0.20.0, app 0.11.0: The painted world
2026-09-19. Battle maps painted on the device from their terrain, with skins per setting (sixteen for fantasy) and a device switch to keep the drawn board. Faces on tokens. 2,008 painted icons for spells, items, features, feats, conditions and actions. Painted effects for each energy type, healing, death and crits. Pages crossfade; entering a world no longer reloads. The desktop installer is about 40 MB larger for the art.
0.19.0, app 0.10.0: The virtual tabletop
2026-09-14. Every resolved outcome plays on the board; token HUD, camera pull and lock, low effects mode. Title cards; sky and hour with weather rules. Terrain walls with half cover, senses in the light model, doors that sound, map notes, freehand drawings. The map studio and region map became editors with selection, undo, autosave and hotkeys. The binder: secret blocks, audiences, Show this now, PDF pages, backlinks, autocomplete links, inline rolls, a timeline, a relationship graph, quests. NPC voices, theatre inserts, speaking as an NPC. Lines and veils, the X-card, strictness and tone presets. Legendary and lair actions, fight summaries. Factions with standing and power; a calendar with moons and festivals; torches that gutter. Shops with haggling, player trades, several characters per player. The settlement generator; One Page Dungeon and Watabou imports; prepared worlds as workshops. The chrome-free table view; transcription for human-DM tables; a dual-track recap. A parchment day theme and interface scale. Desktop: the table on a second screen. Android: haptics, PDF pages in the phone's viewer.
0.18.0, app 0.9.0: Your own dice, and shake to roll
2026-09-12. The dice editor with a live 3D tray, nineteen presets, saved on the account. The dice button is a menu. Shake to roll on phones and tablets, holding rolls until a shake or Roll now. The workshop's Plugin tool builds world packs with guided setup, catalogue pickers and a Publish tab.
0.17.1 and 0.17.0, app 0.8.0: The content pack ships; one room code is the door
2026-09-11. The content pack is attached to every release and carried by the Docker image and the apps. A room code sent with a sign-up must name a table that would seat the player; an app-hosted world admits accounts only with a live room code, with no passwords and no sign-up policy; the browser join page asks for a name only. The builder requires every pick with "N still to choose"; the spell list is open from the start. Workshop pick lists for casting time, range, components and more, and a glossary beside conditions and schools. In the app: Enter room code and Scan invite QR on the home screen, a saved world probed before a session is sent, a host that is offline says so, the room code kept on the entry so a moved world is found, and the bundled server carries the content pack.
0.16.x, apps 0.7.0 to 0.7.16: The apps carry the screens
2026-09-06 and 07. 0.16.0 portal mode; 0.16.1 the apps draw the host's screens themselves over the host's API; 0.16.2 device settings for audio and dice on every page; 0.16.3 workshop tours, written guides per tool, and pick lists instead of typed names; 0.16.4 a room code that names the host too (ABCD2345-EFGH6789). The 0.7.x apps: join by room code typed on both shells, the registry asked what a code means, published codes that follow the world to a new address, no password anywhere an app is the host, a smaller download.
0.15.0, app 0.6.0: Packs with their own art, a table that shows you around
2026-09-06. World packs carry a cover and pictures for races, classes, backgrounds, monsters, places and factions; the 27 community packs got art. Two spotlight tours of the table, for players and the DM seat. The account menu and an app-home button on every page. The share sheet beside copy and QR. In the app: a guided tour of the shell, a user guide and Settings in the top bar, campaign covers on the home screen, a hide-offline switch, and a pasted link or address taking the same path as a scan.
0.14.1 and 0.14.0, app 0.5.0: A fully tooled workshop
2026-09-05. Battle maps with shape tools, undo and redo, light sources, labels, props, doors, light zones, ambience cues and a DM-only overlay. Homebrew editors for items, spells, feats, backgrounds, species and subclasses, read by the engines. The full stat block in the bestiary. Encounter extras. Lore with visibility, handouts and links. Table weights and nesting. A Party system with pregens. The region map at any size with roads, rivers, borders, labels, a backdrop, Azgaar import and PNG export. Bundles carry homebrew and pregens; import by kind. A server address button and QR for the apps. 0.14.1 restored the glibc Docker image. In the app: add a server by scanning its QR, a much leaner payload.
0.13.0, app 0.4.0: The new look, deleting your account
2026-09-05. One shared frame restyles every page; the home page is a dashboard; the campaign creator and character builder are stepped wizards; the workshop is a hub with a page per system; campaigns have cover art; invite links preview the table before sign-in. Delete account with an admin-set grace period (0 to 90 days, default 14), Keep my account on sign-in, and a purge that removes everything the account owns.
0.12.3, 0.12.2 and 0.12.1, apps 0.3.0 and 0.3.1: What the apps needed
2026-09-02. Sharing a device-hosted world starts when a lobby opens. SQLite behind one driver so the Android app can host a world with a Node runtime built for Android. Switch server in the account menu inside the apps. One invite link shape at opendungeonmaster.com/j with a confirmation page, Android App Links, share links that know the server's public address, room codes that vouch for a sign-up. Bearer sign-in for native apps, sign-ups open, invite-only or closed with admin-minted invites, Discord-only accounts able to set a password. The tunnel broker giving a hosted session a stable play-CODE name; TURN with a budget. Mesh voice for servers that cannot open a media port. Friends, notifications over a live stream, presence, session reminders. Story settings editable in the Setup tab; the DM seat can change hands; a real "no AI" state; controls following story authority; an OpenAI image backend; workshop bundles carrying their art. Security: a leak of per-campaign keys into member snapshots fixed (rotate keys set on 0.12.0), asset routes behind login, the ComfyUI probe admin-only, join and registration throttled.
0.12.0: Human DM mode, the workshop, voice chat and a terms of service
2026-08-31. A terms of service written for self-hosted software. Human DM mode with the console, panels, roll visibility, story-beat capture and assisted mode. The workshop as a campaign that never plays, with import at creation and from the lobby. Voice chat over an in-process media server with floor rules, side rooms, proximity, whispers and shouts. Ambience in three layers. Dice sources per shape including Pixels. Hand-painted region maps, a stamp palette, Universal VTT import, prepared maps that outlive their encounter. Active effects with durations, a calendar and clock, the party as an entity with a purse, coin denominations, unidentified items, mounted combat, scene trackers.
Earlier releases (0.10 and 0.11: Docker install, campaign plugins, Ask the DM, narration control, the relationship meter) are on the release pages.
