Version compatibility

The apps and the server have separate release trains. An app release is built against a specific server version, which it carries inside for the device world, and it can visit any server; how it draws a server depends on that server's version.
How an app draws a host

A host newer than the app usually still opens on the app's own screens; a feature the host added that the app does not know is simply absent until the app updates. The update popup on the desktop says so.
